Irving Residents: Mobile and Tower Crane Training in Seagoville

From Irving our yard is about 30 road miles southeast, on the far side of Dallas. It is a manageable daily drive if you leave early and pick the right freeway.

Crossing Dallas every morning

There are two sensible ways over. The direct one is SH-183 or Loop 12 east to I-35E, then through downtown to US-175 and southeast into Seagoville. The other skips downtown entirely: I-635 east across North Dallas, then south toward Mesquite and I-20. The loop is longer in miles but often steadier, especially if you live in north Irving or Valley Ranch.

Budget around 45 minutes and leave before 6:15 AM to make a 7:00 start. Plenty of Irving students carpool or simply treat the drive as part of the workday. A hotel stay is rarely worth it from here, though some people book a few nights near the end of a long course to stay fresh for the practical exam.

What gets lifted around Las Colinas and the airport

Irving's skyline and job base look different from most suburbs. Las Colinas is packed with office towers and corporate campuses, and the city has become one of the area's busier spots for data center construction. DFW International Airport sits on Irving's western edge, with constant work on terminals, hangars and roads.

Each of those settings uses cranes in its own way:

  • Data centers mean heavy picks of generators, chillers, transformers and rooftop equipment, mostly with telescopic hydraulic cranes.
  • Mid-rise and high-rise buildings are often built around a tower crane that stays on site for the whole structure.
  • Airport and freeway jobs involve long days of repetitive picks, tight clearances and strict communication between the operator and the ground.

Choosing between mobile and tower

Most new operators start on mobile cranes because more of the area's work uses them and the skills carry over to almost every job. The 120-hour fixed/swing cab course is built for someone with no seat time at all.

Tower crane training is a different animal. You sit high above the site, often unable to see the load at the start of a pick, and you depend on a signal person by radio. Our tower courses come in 40 and 20 hour versions; the shorter one suits operators who already have time in a tower cab and mainly need exam preparation for the NCCCO Tower Crane certification. Practice happens on the tower crane in our yard, which is also where the tower practical exam is given.

Whichever crane you pick, OSHA 1926.1427 requires certification for the type of crane you operate on construction work, so plan to add a second certification later if you change equipment.

Funding when you live in Irving

Irving is in Dallas County, which falls under Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas. Contact them about WIOA-funded training before you enroll; they control eligibility and paperwork, and they will want to know the exact course you have in mind.

Veterans may use Chapter 33 or Chapter 31 benefits with us. If your employer is backing the training, ask whether they will pay up front or reimburse you, since that changes how enrollment is handled. All the options, plus tuition, are laid out on the funding options page.

Before your first day

Look over the training schedule and pick a start date that leaves room for the full course; missing days makes it hard to keep up with yard practice. Bring a government photo ID, steel or composite toe boots and work clothes. Practice questions on our practice page are a good way to get used to the style of the written exams before you arrive.

Mobile and tower options for Irving

Data center and campus work runs mostly on telescopic cranes, while Las Colinas towers call for tower crane operators and the people who signal them.

Questions from Irving

Is it better to take I-35E through downtown or I-635 around it?

Downtown is shorter; the loop avoids the US-175 merge and can be calmer. Try both before your course starts and stick with whichever gets you to Seagoville by 7:00 AM.

Do you train on a real tower crane?

Yes. Our Seagoville yard has a tower crane used for both training and the NCCCO tower practical exam.

Which tower crane course should I take if I have never run a tower crane?

Usually the 40-hour version, which leaves more time in the cab. The 20-hour course is meant for people with tower experience who mainly need exam preparation. Call us and we will help you decide.

Which Workforce Solutions office covers Irving?
