When you already know the controls
Maybe you learned on the job setting trusses and materials for homes up in the hills, or worked for a crane rental outfit that never put you through formal certification. Now a contractor or a project requires the card. You don't need to start over with a 120-hour beginner course. What you need is focused preparation: load chart practice, the rules you'll be tested on, and runs through the practical exam course until it's routine.
Our shorter courses are built for that:
- Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab 40 Hours for telescopic crane operators
- Mobile Crane Operations Lattice 20 Hours for crawler operators with real lattice experience
- Tower Crane Operations 20 Hours for experienced tower operators
The 20-hour courses are only for people with genuine time on that crane type. If you're not sure where you stand, describe your experience when you call and we'll suggest a length.
Hill Country habits the exam will test
Work around the lake teaches skills that carry straight into the NCCCO exams, along with a few habits worth checking. Setting up on sloped lots and caliche shoulders makes you think hard about outrigger cribbing and level, which is exactly what the written exam asks about under ground conditions and set-up. Lifting over rooflines from the street means long radius picks where the chart, not your instinct, sets the limit.
Where experienced operators lose points is usually the paperwork side: deductions for the hook block, rigging and stowed jib, the difference between structural and stability limits on the chart, and the parts of ASME B30.5 they've never read. The practical exam brings its own surprises, since it's timed and scored on smooth, precise movements, not just getting the load there. Expect your course to spend more time on those areas than on basic operation.
Getting off the lake and onto I-35
RM 1431 is the main road out of Lago Vista. Follow it east through Jonestown and Cedar Park to I-35 in Round Rock, then head north for Waco and Hillsboro. Above Hillsboro, take I-35E into Dallas and I-20 east to Seagoville. Figure about 200 miles and three and a half hours; RM 1431's curves and lights make the first stretch slower than it looks on a map.
Since a daily round trip is out of the question, plan to stay near the school for the course. A 20-hour course is a few nights; a 40-hour course is a full week. The Premium Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course pairs the 40-hour fixed/swing cab training with a room and board option.
Fitting class around your work
Operators who are already employed usually want the shortest time off the job. Look at the training schedule and pick a start date during a slower stretch of your work, and ask us about the NCCCO exam timing for that class. Employers often cover the cost when certification is required for a job; otherwise you can self-pay. Lago Vista residents are in Travis County, so Workforce Solutions Capital Area is the board for WIOA questions, and veterans can use GI Bill® benefits. Details are on the funding page.
