How long you'd actually be gone
Our yard sits about 260 road miles north of Pearland, so this is an out-of-town stay, not a commute. The course you choose sets the length of that stay:
| Course | Time in Seagoville |
|---|---|
| Rigger/Signal Person Certification Level I | 28 hours, under one week |
| 40-hour fixed/swing cab, lattice or tower | One week of 8-hour days |
| 120-hour fixed/swing cab | About three weeks |
Classes run on weekdays. Some students drive home for the weekend in the middle of a long course; others stay and study load charts. Work out with your household which approach is realistic before you enroll.
If your current job won't give you three weeks off, a shorter course now and a longer one later is an option, but it means two trips north instead of one. Most people find it simpler to block out the time once.
Standard tuition plus your own room, or a premium course
Every premium course matches a standard course hour for hour and adds premium extras and the option of room and board. The tuition difference is easy to see:
- 40-hour fixed/swing cab: $2,800 standard, $3,600 premium.
- 120-hour fixed/swing cab: $6,400 standard, $8,500 for Premium Plus.
- 40-hour lattice: $5,500 standard, $6,000 premium. Premium tower tuition is $6,000; ask for the schedule.
Compare that gap with what a week or three of lodging and meals near Dallas would cost you on your own. If you have relatives in the Dallas area, standard tuition usually wins. If not, premium often turns out simpler. Ask us exactly what the premium extras include for your dates; details are on the premium courses page.
Routes out of Pearland
Most people take SH 288 north toward Houston, then Beltway 8 or I-610 east to I-45 and follow the interstate north to the Dallas area. Leaving before the morning rush on 288 saves a lot of time. Figure on four hours or a little more door to door.
Hobby Airport is a short drive from Pearland if you'd rather fly into Dallas Love Field. Plan on renting a car on arrival, because getting to the yard each morning is on you.
What a weekday at the yard looks like
Our hours run from early morning into late afternoon Monday through Thursday, a little shorter on Friday. A typical day mixes classroom work on load charts and rules with simulator practice and seat time on the cranes in the yard. Early in a course the balance leans toward the classroom; by the end, most of the day is spent running the practical exam course. Evenings are yours, and many students use them to review for the written exams. That rhythm is one more reason to stay close to Seagoville rather than drive in from far away.
Work you could come home to
Pearland is a residential city first, but it sits between two big industrial areas. To the north is Houston, with the Ship Channel, port terminals and constant commercial construction. To the south, Brazoria County has large chemical plants near the coast around Freeport. Both use mobile cranes, crawler cranes and rigging crews. New warehouses, schools and retail along the SH 288 corridor add more routine lifts.
Since OSHA requires certified operators for most construction crane work, an NCCCO certification for the crane type an employer runs is what opens the door. Ask local contractors which crane they'd put you on.
Funding when you live in Brazoria County
Most of Pearland is in Brazoria County, with parts in Harris and Fort Bend. All three counties fall under Workforce Solutions and the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, so you'd speak with one of their career offices about WIOA training funds. They decide eligibility, not us. Veterans can use GI Bill® benefits (Chapters 33 and 31), and some employers sponsor training. See funding options.
