Planning Several Weeks of Crane Training From Leander

Leander residents who are new to cranes usually end up looking at our longest course, which means weeks in the Dallas area. A little planning before the first day makes that much easier.

The real budget: tuition, a place to stay, time off

When people from Leander price out crane school, they often look only at tuition. For a stay of several weeks, think in three columns:

  1. Tuition. The Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab 120 Hours course is $6,400. The Premium Plus Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course covers the same 120 hours for $8,500 and adds premium extras plus a room and board option.
  2. Lodging and meals. If you take the standard course, you'll pay for your own room and food in the Dallas area for every night of class. Compare that total with the difference in premium tuition.
  3. Time away from paid work. Class runs full weekdays, so plan your bills and any leave from your current job ahead of the start date.

Workforce funds or veterans' benefits can change the math a lot, so check those first.

Funding from Williamson County

Most of Leander lies in Williamson County, whose local board is Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area; addresses in the small Travis County portion of the city go to Workforce Solutions Capital Area. Either board decides on its own whether you qualify for WIOA training money. For veterans, we're approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) and Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31). Ask VA for your Certificate of Eligibility early. More on all of this is on the funding page and the VA information page.

Packing for the yard

You'll spend a lot of time outdoors in the training yard, and the weather in North Texas swings from hot to raw and windy. Bring:

  • A government photo ID
  • Sturdy work boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty
  • Layers, a rain jacket and a hat for sun
  • A water bottle and something for lunch if you're not on room and board
  • A notebook and a basic calculator for load chart practice

The what to expect page covers the rest.

How the course builds toward the exams

The early days lean on the classroom and the simulator: crane parts, the federal rules, and reading a load chart with all its deductions for rigging, block and jib. Once the basics click, more of each day moves outside to the telescopic cranes, starting with set-up and moving into controlled swings and placing loads.

Later in the course, practice shifts to the moves on the NCCCO mobile fixed and swing cab practical test, which is given in the same yard. Written exam prep runs alongside, with practice questions you can also find on our practice page.

The drive north

Leander is about 190 road miles from Seagoville. Most people head east to I-35 at Round Rock or Georgetown, then run north through Waco, staying on I-35E at Hillsboro and taking I-20 east near Dallas. Budget a little over three hours. Leave yourself slack on the first morning so you're not walking in late on day one.

What Leander beginners usually compare

The 120-hour course and its premium counterpart differ mainly in the room and board option; the 4-hour rigging course is a short introduction before you commit.

Leander students ask

Is the premium 120-hour course worth it if I'm coming from Leander?

Compare the $2,100 tuition difference with what you'd spend on your own room and meals for the length of the course. For many people traveling about 190 miles, the room and board option is simpler; others prefer to book their own stay.

What is the 4-hour rigging course, and does it give me an NCCCO card?

The Miller Crane Works Level I Rigger/Signal Person 4 Hours course is a short Miller Crane Works qualification, not an NCCCO certification. For NCCCO Rigger Level I and Signalperson, take the 28-hour course.

Do I take the NCCCO practical exam somewhere else after training?

No. NCCCO practical exams are given at our Seagoville yard, on the same course you practice on during class.

Can a Leander student get help paying for crane school?

Possibly. Check with Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area if you live in the Williamson County part of Leander, or Workforce Solutions Capital Area for the Travis County part. Veterans can use GI Bill benefits.
