Windcrest Military Families Looking at Crane Careers

Windcrest is a small city inside Loop 410 on San Antonio's northeast side, with JBSA-Randolph and Fort Sam Houston both a short drive away. It is about 280 road miles from our Seagoville yard, and many of the people who ask us about it are service members, veterans or their family members.

Who in the household can use the benefit

Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) benefits belong to the service member or veteran who earned them. In some cases a service member transfers unused entitlement to a spouse or child, and that family member can then use it for approved training. Whether a transfer happened, and how much entitlement is left, is something only VA and the service branch can confirm.

Practical steps for anyone in a Windcrest household:

  1. Confirm eligibility with VA and request a Certificate of Eligibility in the name of the person who will attend.
  2. Ask VA how a non-college program like crane operator training is paid and how much entitlement it uses.
  3. Send us the certificate when you enroll. We are approved for Chapter 33 and for Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31).

Our VA compliance policy covers what happens while VA payment is pending: no late fees, and full access to classes.

Timing training around military life

Families near Randolph and Fort Sam often plan around a separation date, a PCS move or a spouse's deployment. A few things help:

  • Course length. A 40-hour course takes about one week; the 120-hour fixed/swing cab course takes about three.
  • Start dates. Check the training schedule early and line your paperwork up with a specific class.
  • Childcare and home. You will be away from Windcrest for the full course, so arrange coverage at home before you commit.

Service members who are still on active duty should talk to their education office before enrolling.

What the work involves

Many veterans already know rigging, load securing and hand signals from their time in uniform, and that background helps. Civilian crane work adds formal certification: OSHA requires construction crane operators to be certified for the type of crane they run, and NCCCO certification is the one most contractors expect. Ground crew roles call for qualified riggers and signal persons. Our 28-hour rigger and signal person course prepares you for NCCCO Rigger Level I and Signalperson, and pairs well with an operator course.

Getting to Seagoville from the northeast side

Windcrest sits close to the I-35 and Loop 410 interchange, so you are on the interstate within minutes. Follow I-35 north past Austin and Waco, then turn east through the Dallas area to Seagoville. Expect four and a half hours or more. Flying from San Antonio International to Dallas Love Field or DFW works too, with a rental car for the daily drive.

A training day, hour by hour

Days start early and run on a full work schedule. A typical day in the first week begins in the classroom with a short review, followed by new material: crane components one day, load charts or signals the next. Late morning often moves to the simulator. Afternoons shift outdoors, where you inspect the crane, set up and practice controlled moves under an instructor's eye. Later in the course, more of the day is spent in the yard running the tasks from the NCCCO practical exam. Breaks for water are frequent in the summer. Evenings are yours, and most students spend some of them reviewing charts and practice questions.

Plan the drive so you arrive the evening before class. Pulling in tired after a dawn departure makes for a rough first morning, and day one starts in the classroom with a lot to absorb.

Lodging during the course

You will be staying near the school for the whole course. Book your own place, or choose a premium course, which carries the same approved hours as the standard course and includes an option for room and board in Seagoville. Ask VA how a premium course fits your benefit before you register, and see funding options for tuition.

Common picks for Windcrest military families

Premium versions include optional room and board, which helps when someone at home is holding things together.

Windcrest questions about benefits and timing

Can my spouse use my transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for crane training?

If VA confirms the transfer and your spouse's eligibility, they can use it at an approved school like ours. Your spouse should request their own Certificate of Eligibility.

I already rigged loads in the military. Do I still need certification?

Civilian employers usually expect NCCCO credentials. Your experience helps, and the 28-hour course prepares you for the NCCCO rigger and signal person exams.

Can I train while I'm still stationed at JBSA?

Talk to your education office and command first. The course runs full weekdays in Seagoville, so you need to be available for the whole course.

How long will I be away from Windcrest?

About a week for a 40-hour course and about three weeks for the 120-hour course, plus travel days.
