Wylie and East Collin County: Getting Certified to Run Cranes

Wylie has grown from a small town by Lake Lavon into one of Collin County's busier suburbs. Our training yard in Seagoville is about 30 road miles to the south.

SH-78 down to the loop

From Wylie, the straightforward path is SH-78 southwest through Sachse and into Garland, then I-635 south through Mesquite to I-20, and a few minutes east and south to our yard on Tunnell Street. Allow 45 minutes or so in the early morning. Either way, it is a normal daily commute, and nobody from Wylie needs to stay over.

Water plants, new roads and new neighborhoods

Wylie is home to the headquarters of the North Texas Municipal Water District, which serves a large part of the fast-growing northern and eastern suburbs. Water and wastewater treatment plants are full of heavy, awkward loads: pumps, motors, valves, precast concrete and tank components that need careful rigging and an operator who understands load charts.

The rest of east Collin County keeps cranes busy too. Highway widening, new bridges, school buildings and commercial centers follow residential growth. Heavy civil and plant work like this is where lattice boom crawler cranes show up, alongside the telescopic cranes used for most commercial building.

Lattice boom or telescopic?

If you want into heavy civil, utilities or plant construction, consider lattice boom training. Crawler cranes are assembled in sections, travel on tracks, and require a solid grasp of assembly, ground bearing pressure and boom configuration. Our 40-hour lattice course trains on the crawler crane in our yard and prepares you for the NCCCO Lattice Boom Crawler exams; the 20-hour version suits operators who already have lattice seat time.

For commercial and residential-area work, a telescopic certification is the more common first step. Many operators eventually hold both. Keep in mind that the lattice and telescopic certifications are separate, and each has its own practical exam. The lattice practical is given in our yard, like the telescopic one.

Funding for Wylie residents

Wylie is mainly in Collin County, with edges reaching into Rockwall and Dallas counties. For most residents, the local board is Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, which covers Collin and Rockwall counties. If your address is on the Dallas County side, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas is your board instead. Either one makes its own decisions on WIOA eligibility and approved courses.

Veterans may use Chapter 33 or Chapter 31 benefits with us. Utility contractors and public works departments sometimes sponsor their own employees; ask your supervisor before paying out of pocket. Tuition is listed on the funding options page.

Planning around home

Wylie has a lot of young families, and full-time training takes coordination. Classes run 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Friday, so you will be out the door before school drop-off and home around dinner. Short courses like the 20-hour lattice program take only a few days; the 120-hour fixed/swing cab course spans several weeks. Pick a start date on the schedule that lines up with your other commitments, and call if you want to talk through timing.

Courses for utility, civil and commercial work

Lattice boom training fits plant and heavy civil jobs; fixed/swing cab and rigging cover the commercial side.

Wylie residents want to know

Does Collin County have its own workforce board for training funds?

Collin County is part of the area served by Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas. Contact them about WIOA eligibility before you enroll.

Should someone in Wylie learn lattice boom or telescopic cranes first?

It depends on the work you want. Utility, treatment plant and heavy civil jobs use more crawler cranes; commercial building leans on telescopic cranes. If you are undecided, the 120-hour fixed/swing cab course is the broadest start.

How long does the drive from Wylie take?

About 45 minutes in early morning traffic, by SH-78, I-635 and I-20.

Do you offer classes closer to Wylie?

No. Our only training site is in Seagoville, and all NCCCO practical exams are given there.
