Our Mobile Crane Operator Courses Side by Side: Which Fixed/Swing Cab Option Fits You

Telescopic mobile crane on the NCCCO practical exam course in the Miller Crane Works yard

We offer four ways to train for NCCCO telescopic mobile crane certification. They cover the same kind of crane and lead to the same exams. What differs is how much time you get, and whether you add optional room and board.

The four options at a glance

CourseTuitionBest suited to
Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab 40 Hours$2,800People who have already run cranes and mainly need to sharpen skills and prepare for the exams
Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab 120 Hours$6,400New operators who live close enough to commute
Premium Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course$3,600Students traveling in who want optional room and board and focused exam preparation
Premium Plus Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course$8,500Students traveling in who want optional room and board plus the most complete program, including simulator time

All four are taught at our yard in Seagoville, Texas, which is also where NCCCO practical exams are given. Check each course page for current details.

Why hours matter so much for beginners

Running a telescopic crane well is a motor skill, like driving a manual transmission in traffic. Understanding the controls takes an afternoon. Moving a load smoothly through a combined boom, swing and hoist motion, stopping it without a swing, and doing it under time pressure takes repetition.

Beginners also have a lot of written material to absorb: crane components, OSHA and ASME rules, power line clearances and, above all, load charts. A longer course spreads that over more days, with time to go back over what didn't stick. That is why we steer people with no crane time toward the 120-hour option or Premium Plus.

When 40 hours is enough

The 40-hour course makes sense if you can honestly say yes to most of these:

  • You've operated a telescopic crane before, even if under supervision or some time ago.
  • You're comfortable with the basic functions and don't need to think about which lever does what.
  • You've seen a load chart and know what a deduction is.
  • Your employer has asked you to get certified on a crane you already run.

If several of those are a no, you'll likely spend the 40 hours catching up instead of preparing for the exams.

Commute or stay over

The standard courses assume you can get yourself to Seagoville each morning. For students in the Dallas area that is a straightforward drive. For someone from West Texas, the Gulf Coast or another state, paying for a hotel across several weeks adds up and the logistics get in the way of study.

The premium courses offer optional room and board, so traveling students can focus on training. Our premium courses with optional room and board page explains the arrangement. The closest airports are Dallas Love Field and DFW International; most students who fly in still plan for a car.

Paying for each option

The funding route can influence which option you pick:

  • GI Bill® and VR&E: veterans often choose a premium course because optional room and board is available. Confirm with VA what your benefit covers.
  • Workforce funding (WIOA): your local Workforce Solutions office decides whether and how much it will fund. Bring them the course name and tuition.
  • Employer sponsorship: companies certifying an experienced hand usually choose the 40-hour course.
  • Self-pay: ask about the schedule so you can plan time off work.

The funding options page covers each route.

Still not sure?

Call (214) 763-0513 or text (469) 319-9009 and tell us how much crane time you have, where you live and how you plan to pay. That's usually enough to point you to the right option in a few minutes. You can also see the mobile crane practical exam page to understand what you're training toward.

Questions we hear

Do all four mobile crane courses prepare me for the same NCCCO exams?

Yes. All four are fixed/swing cab programs aimed at NCCCO telescopic mobile crane certification. They differ in length, optional room and board, and extras such as simulator time.

Which mobile crane course offers optional room and board?

The Premium Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course and the Premium Plus Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course both offer optional room and board for traveling students.

I've never operated a crane. Is the 40-hour course an option?

It's possible, but most beginners need more seat time than 40 hours allows. The 120-hour course or Premium Plus gives you room to build skill before testing.
