Budgeting for NCCCO Crane Certification When You Live in Houston

Tuition is only one line in the real cost of getting certified. For a Houston student training out of town, travel and time away from work can matter just as much. Here is how to build an honest budget.

The five costs to plan for

CostWhat to find out
TuitionThe listed price of the course and what it covers.
NCCCO exam feesWhether tuition includes written and practical exam fees, or you pay NCCCO separately. NCCCO publishes its fees.
TravelFuel for about 240 miles each way, or airfare to Dallas plus a rental car.
Lodging and mealsNights near the school for the whole course.
Lost incomeWeekdays you will not be working.

Write a number next to each line before you choose a course. A course that looks cheaper may cost more once lodging is added.

Tuition at Miller Crane Works

Our tuition is published. A few examples: the Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab 40 Hours course is $2,800, the 120-hour version is $6,400, and the Rigger/Signal Person Certification Level I 28 Hours course is $2,550. Premium courses that offer optional room and board for traveling students range from $3,600 to $8,500 depending on the course. The full list is on the funding page. Ask us what's included in the course you're considering, so you can compare like with like.

Housing: build it in or book it yourself

For Houston students, lodging is often the biggest cost after tuition. You can book your own hotel or extended-stay room near Seagoville, or pick a premium course that offers optional room and board. When comparing, multiply your nightly rate by the number of nights, including the night before the first class, then compare that total against the price difference between a standard and a premium course.

Food adds up too. Students who book a room with a kitchenette and pack lunches spend far less than those who eat out every meal. Bring a cooler for the yard: water and lunch on hand mean you stay at the school instead of driving off at midday.

If you drive up, factor in fuel for the round trip and any trips home on weekends. Flying saves time but adds a rental car for the whole stay, since you'll need to get to the yard every weekday.

Ways to pay that reduce out-of-pocket cost

  • WIOA training funds: Workforce Solutions in the Houston-Galveston area decides who qualifies and what it covers. Our courses are TWC-approved, which is the starting point. Ask your case manager whether travel or lodging support is available.
  • GI Bill® benefits: we're approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) and Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31). Your benefits may also include a housing allowance, depending on your chapter and eligibility; confirm with VA.
  • Employer sponsorship: plant and construction contractors often pay for operator or rigging training. Ask before you pay yourself.

Don't forget the time

A 40-hour course takes a week of weekdays; the 120-hour course takes several weeks. Ask your employer whether training counts as paid time. If you are between jobs, plan how you'll cover bills for the length of the course plus a little extra for the exam schedule.

Also budget for a retake. Nobody plans to fail an exam, but knowing the retest fee in advance turns a setback into an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

Next step

Once you have rough numbers, call us at (214) 763-0513 or text (469) 319-9009 with your course choice and funding source. We'll confirm current tuition and dates from the training schedule, and if you need housing, we'll go over the Premium Plus Mobile Crane Operations Fixed/Swing Cab Course.

Cost questions from Houston students

Are NCCCO exam fees included in tuition?

Ask about your specific course before enrolling, and get the answer in writing. NCCCO publishes its own exam fees.

Is it cheaper to take a premium course with optional room and board?

It depends on how long the course is and what you'd pay for lodging. Compare the total of your nightly rate times the nights needed against the premium course price difference.

Can workforce funding cover training outside Houston?

It can, but Workforce Solutions decides. Ask your case manager about our TWC-approved course and about any travel support.
